I am not sure where matcha lattes were for most of my life, but I was in my early thirties before I ever had my first one. Now, I find myself making my simple matcha latte recipe several times each week, as it’s become a staple in my morning routine. Although green tea has been a widely popular beverage for centuries, it feels like matcha only just soared in popularity over the past several years. I am so glad it did because it quickly became my go-to healthy caffeine boost. And bonus: It’s been shown to have even more health benefits than traditional green tea!
My mother, who has always been an advocate for healthy living, introduced me to matcha and made the very first matcha latte I ever tried. Any time I visit my parents, my mom makes matcha lattes in the mornings, and of course, hers are my favorite. If you are unfamiliar with matcha, the green flavor can be a bit of an acquired taste at first, but once you get into the habit of drinking matcha daily, it can quickly become part of a morning routine you don’t want to miss. There are many variations of matcha lattes, from hand-frothed to mixing the matcha with water and adding different flavors. There is a lot of creative liberty when combining a variety of ingredients and trying different preparation methods. I have made peppermint matcha lattes as well as vanilla at home, but many beverage shops offer flavors like strawberry, coffee, and more. Truly, I find my simple matcha latte recipe to be incredibly warm and satisfying. It’s perfect for sipping slowly on the weekends, but easy to pull together on a busy morning before you start your day.
There are beverage tools you can purchase to help you measure the powder, mix the matcha, and froth the milk, if you enjoy the process of creating matcha lattes. For example, a bamboo whisk and electric milk frother are often used. However, the tools already in your kitchen will likely be sufficient for a basic beverage. I use an electric frother that I found to be well-worth purchasing since I use it so frequently; however, whisking milk by hand over the stove can work well in the absence of a frother. While a bamboo whisk is a popular tool for mixing matcha, I generally sift mine through a mesh strainer directly into the frother. Sifting removes clumps in the powder to create a smoother beverage.
I have included links below to the some of the tools and ingredients I use to make matcha lattes as well some popular matcha-making accessories you may consider adding to your kitchen.

Simple Matcha Latte
Ingredients
- 1 Cup Almond milk Or milk of choice (I like Malk Vanilla Almond Milk). If you prefer a less creamy beverage, you can use 1/2 cup almond milk and 1/2 cup of water.
- 3/4 Tsp Matcha green tea powder I prefer organic, ceremonial grade matcha
- 1/4 Tsp Vanilla extract Optional
- 1 Scoop Collagen peptides Optional
Instructions
- Pour almond milk into electric frother.
- Add matcha green tea power to the almond milk by sifting it through a fine mesh stainless steal strainer. Do the same with the collagen peptides. This step helps break up the matcha and collagen to prevent any clumping.
- Add the vanilla extract to the frother.
- Froth on the warm setting until heated through. I prefer setting the temperature on my frother to about 140-150 degrees Fahrenheit and frothing the beverage twice.
- When frothing is complete pour into a coffee mug and enjoy!
